Patchpaw limped in between her parents as they glared ahead, not looking at her and saying nothing. Patchpaw was sore and her paw hurt as they walked, causing the limp. She kept her ears pinned back in shame, I can’t believe I got caught…

Finally Spottedstar sighed and glanced at Patchpaw as she stumbled over a small dip in the ground. “Sootfeather, could you please help Patchpaw back to camp. Take it as slow as you need too, I can’t work an apprentice with a strained leg.”

Patchpaw groaned; why did it have to be Sootfeather? The gray fuzz ball obeyed Spottedstar’s orders quickly, and loped to her side. “Here, lean on me so you don’t hurt your paw,” he meowed, walking beside her as she kept limping onward.

Patchpaw poked her tongue out at him and then promptly tripped again, this time falling flat on her face. Sootfeather laughed at her clumsy move, and as the rest of WindClan kept walking, ignoring her completely other then Brackenpaw’s cold glare as he passed. Sootfeather sat down beside her and wrapped his tail around his tabby striped paws.

“What’s so funny?” Patchpaw spat dirt out of her mouth as she said it, making Sootfeather laugh harder. Patchpaw sat herself up with as much dignity she could muster and glared as Sootfeather’s laughter slowly died.

He grinned and sighed at her and she could no longer see WindClan as they climbed another hill, vanishing from view and leaving her alone with the warrior. “You’re an odd cat, I hope you know that.”

Patchpaw looked at him spitefully. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re about as clumsy as a ThunderClan apprentice on his first hunt,” Sootfeather said with a cocky grin on his face. Patchpaw swung a pawful of claws at his hansom face, but the warrior dodged her swing easily. “Haven’t you broken enough rules tonight without trying to attacking me?”

“Fox dung!” Patchpaw swore at the tom. She didn’t make it a habit to swear, and Sootfeather was a little taken aback but smiled nonetheless.

“Will you let me help now?” Sootfeather stood and turned his side to her, waiting for her to lean on him so they could make it back to camp. Patchpaw groaned in defeat and took up his offer, leaning on him reluctantly. “We don’t want to miss your brother’s warrior ceremony,” Sootfeather said casually, and then his grin dissappeared as he continued, “How old is he now?”

Patchpaw glanced at him for a second; is he going to talk the whole way back to camp? Patchpaw thought about the question, “Um…Brackenpaw, Whitepaw, and I are all eleven moons now.”

“Well, he’s becoming a warrior early. I was sixteen moons old before my own warrior ceremony,” Sootfeather stated, keeping their pace slow. He chuckled, “So when are you planning on joining your brother and I as a warrior, little apprentice?”

Patchpaw frowned. “Well, if it’s you two I’ll have as company, I think I’ll wait a while.” She looked away and lifted her nose in the air. She could feel Sootfeather’s gaze and hear him laugh softly.

“You do want to become a warrior, right?”

Patchpaw blinked. “Why would I? Why should I? I have fun as an apprentice. Why would I want to grow old and stuffy like the rest of you?”

Sootfeather stopped, causing Patchpaw to lose her balance before she caught up with herself and stood, this time keeping herself from falling on her face. Patchpaw was ready to yell at Sootfeather when he said, “What? You just see us as a bunch of stuffy, old warriors? You don’t think we have fun?” Sootfeather almost looked hurt as he asked her these questions.

“Well, I know my mother doesn’t. And I remember her telling me that the happiest time in her life was when she was a kit and apprentice.”

Sootfeather kneaded the ground and looked away, obviously uncomfortable. “Yes, well, that’s Spottedstar…but being a warrior isn’t all about rules and the code. It’s about honor, and loyalty, and justice. We aren’t warriors because of our code, but because of our strong wills and fierce nature. It’s true the code keeps us together, but that’s only half of who we really are.”

Patchpaw yawned. “It’s all the same to me, sir, warrior, sir.”

Sootfeather glared at her as they continued their walk with Patchpaw leaning against him. “It’s also about respect, you scrap of fur. And until you learn that, you can count on being an apprentice for a long time.” Sootfeather’s normally warm and rough voice sounded cold beside her as he spoke.

“You sure know a lot about warriors for only being one yourself for two greenleafs,” Patchpaw said tautly.

He smiled as they reached the top of the hill that overlooked WindClan camp. “Rapidbreeze was a good teacher.”

A pen drawing I did at school the other day when I was bored, and yeah, I know Sootfeather's face looks really weird but can you do.

Anyway, I love these two. lol, Sootfeather's such a goodie-goodie and Patchpaw's....well, Patchpaw. ^^'
